American Board of Plastic Surgery
How I became Board Certified
I first passed a one day written examination on all aspects of Cosmetic and Reconstructive techniques in Plastic Surgery after my residency training. After passing this written examination I was allowed to take the next step, an oral examination.
After 1 year in private practice, I was allowed to take the 2 day oral examination:
Day 1: I had to present to Plastic Surgery examiners, 8 patients which I treated in my first year of practice. These had to be from different categories of Plastic Surgery, such as Cleft Lip, Burns, Cosmetic Surgery, Hand Surgery, Breast Reconstruction, etc.
Day 2: The examiners presented me 8 Plastic Surgery patients unknown to me from different categories and asked me how I would treat their problem.
The examiners questioned me about diseases
and diagnoses, surgical and non-surgical treatments, possible complications
and other options for my patients.
After this intensive
oral examination the American Board of Plastic Surgery experts believed I had sound judgment
and possessed good surgical technique, and granted me Board
Certification in Plastic Surgery.
