Before and After a Chin Implant

Chin Augmentation

By using a chin implantin those individuals who have underdevelopment of the chin, an improvement in overall appearance can be achieved.

As one can see in the photos of this male, the face appears more balanced.

With the chin advanced forward, several apparent changes take place; the jaw line appears more streamline, the lips not so prominent, and the nose appears smaller.

All of these changes have taken place with only a chin implant (8mm thick) and no other surgery.

Important Points To Consider

About The Surgery

There are different materials which can be used to enlarge a chin.My preference is a silicone chin implant.

There are also different designs which have longer side lengths to give the jaw a more square appearance (should be avoided in females).

Incisions To Insert The Chin Implant

Submental / Under the chin

This 1-2 inch incision is the easiest approach for insertion and positioning the chin implant.   Generally I will use this incision when doing a Face Lift or Neck Lift

Buccal / Inside the mouth between the lip and the gums

This 1-2 inch incision is hidden in the inside sulcus of the lower lip and is my usual approach to placing the chin implant

Other Materials To Augment The Chin

Bone Grafts- Autologous (self) or Cadaver Grafts

Can have problems with healing, resorption and infections

Hydroxyapatite Implants - synthetically made porous material that allows bone to grow into the product

Problems include incomplete replacement of the Hydroxyapatite with new bone

Injectables - Silicone, Hydroxyapatite Past, Hyaluronic Acid (Restylane/Juvederm), Collagen and Fat

Most of these are temporary - Silicone injected in large amounts creates inflammation - Fat may not last

Gore-Tex like products of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)

Softform - can be carved and is reasonably strong, yet soft

Tissue - dermal graft either autologous (self) or acellular cadaveric dermis such as Alloderm

Autologous tissue is hard to shape with enough thickness and Alloderm will usually not last more than a few years
