How I Achieve a Natural Look with a
Face Lift and Neck Lift

Christopher Costanzo MD, Thousand Oaks Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon

Info Pg

Fears regarding facial surgery are so common now, that they universally elicit a worried question about whether the individual will be left with an overly tightened, plastic doll look.  Everyone seems to have a story about someone who fits that description.

Achieving a natural facial appearance requires a careful analysis of the facial structures. The unnatural appearance comes about by doing the unnecessary and a poor understanding of dynamic changes that take place with aging.

For example, very few people want or require their basic facial structure to change.  Therefore, overbuilding or excessive removal from the face should be avoided.  Structural building with cheek or chin implants should be used in selected cases when absolutely necessary.  Otherwise, these devices will cause odd looks to develop; the cat-like appearance from overbuilding the cheek, or the square masculine appearance of the female jaw from a wide chin implant.

Soft tissue removal from the face I do with discretion to avoid skeletonization or creation of a cadaverish look that will worsen with age.  Since facial tissue loses support and thins during the latter years, defatting of the face with either liposuction or excision can sometimes be counterproductive to achieving a natural look.  Malpositioning can also be a culprit in creating an unnatural appearance.  Seen most frequently in the improper elevation of the center of the eyebrows resulting in the surprised look.

To restore the natural facial appearance ravaged by aging, the medical adage, "treat the disease not the symptom" should be applied.  Addressing the changes that take place over time means addressing the causes of aging.  Therefore achieving a natural look will necessitate skin and muscle tightening, lifting and repositioning of fallen structures and reinvigorating the cells that make up the facial skin.  The natural appearance comes about by applying the proper direction of pull and the correct amount of tightening to the muscles and skin. Proper lifting techniques should reposition the fallen facial structures back to their original level, without shifting them into an unnatural position.   Rejuvenating the skin through good skin care, proper diet, protection from the sun and the judicial use of lasers and peeling agents to correct wrinkles will improve the overall quality of the facial skin.

A natural facial appearance is easy to achieve and can be done without fear of being left with a plastic doll look.
