Gynecomastia

is abnormal male breast enlargement. 

Typically first seen in puberty.  Most gynecomastia is self limiting, returning the chest area to a normal appearance after puberty has ended.  The causes of gynecomastia are many.  However, the most common causes are hormonal imbalance, marijuana usage and male steroid ingestion (body builders).

A condition referred to as pseudo-gynecomastia or false gynecomastia mimics true gynecomastia.  In pseudo-gynecomastia the breast enlargement is due to fat deposits rather than true glandular enlargement.

Surgery

Treatment consists of excision of the firm glandular tissue through a semicircular incision placed at the base of the areola, similar to that used in breast augmentation.  I like to include liposuction, to contour the remaining breast area which has fat interspersed with the enlarged glandular tissue.

• Recovery time: 3-4 week
